James Phillip Dunlop

1945 ~ 2016

James Philip Dunlop, 70, passed away on August 3, 2016 at home in Aurora, CO after a long fight against cancer.

Jim was born December 7, 1945 in Tacoma, WA to Philip and Shirley (Erskine) Dunlop. After Phil's death when Jim was a toddler, Shirley married H. LeGrande Lewis, a widower with two daughters. They added three more children to the family and raised them in Bountiful, UT.

Jim married Joyce Parker in 1966 in Fulda, Germany while serving in the U.S. Army. They were sealed in the LDS Bern Switzerland Temple five months later. After his service they returned to Utah, where Jim attended school and worked in the motorcycle business, eventually purchasing and running Plaza Cycle. Later Jim switched careers to computer programming and worked in that field for over 30 years in many different locations across the country.

He was a loving father to five daughters and grandfather to nineteen beautiful grandchildren. He was known for his teasing, his love of movies and music, and his knowledge of cars, motorcycles, woodworking, and metalworking. He was gifted mechanically and good with his hands. He enjoyed "putzing" in his workshop, working on projects for the grandkids and repairing everything from appliances to cars. He never stopped working until the job was done right.

Jim was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He faithfully served in many bishoprics and presidencies as they moved state to state. He and Joyce tirelessly cared for the gardens at the LDS Birmingham Alabama Temple for four years. He quietly helped people, giving what he could and using his talents to repair or build things for neighbors and friends. His daughters relied on his advice for home and car repairs-more than once he had to diagnose a car problem over the phone. He was a private but sincere man. He loved his family and worked hard to provide for them. He will be sorely missed.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jacob.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years; his daughters, Stacey (Benjamin) Wolfe of North Plains, OR; Jessica (Daniel) Mortensen of Aurora, CO; Cydney (Phillip) Barno of Aurora, CO; Jennifer Dunlop of South Brunswick, NJ; Jacquelyn (Douglas) Shafer of Hillsboro, OR; 18 grandchildren; his siblings Barbara (Mark) Clary of West Jordan, Utah; Kathy (Bart) Larsen of Bountiful, UT; Connie (Douglas) Jenkins of Logan, UT; Kristine (Craig) Olson of Idaho Falls, ID; and Stephen (Maria) Lewis of Saratoga Springs, UT.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 11:00 am, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah, where a viewing will be held 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com

Memorial donations may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid, Perpetual Education, or Missionary Funds.
